1970년대의 British Folk Rock 은 길어도 길어도 마르지 않는 우물같은 느낌이었다. 아방가르드, 싸이키포크, 트래디셔널포크등

온갖 장르의 포크록이 다양한 시도로 장르를 넘나들며 공존했던 시기

이 음반은 그 중에서도 아주 대중적인, 선명한 멜로디라인을 드러낸 포크넘버로 가득

다른 곡 듣지말고 그냥 'First Boy' 들어보시면 될 듯.

그저 어쩌다 싱글 한 곡씩 잊을 만 하면 툭툭 발표하는 정도.

이 곡은 정말 좋아하는 곡인데 유툽을 찾아보니 누군가 많이들 좋아하셨던 걸로 기억하는 그 드라마 'the End of the Fucking World' 영상을 편집해 넣은 영상이 있어서 올려봄.

창모의 메테오...라는 노래를 아들이 틀어줘서 들었다.

밀릭을 들은 이후 오랜만에 우리나라 힙합씬의 곡 중 딱 귀에 잘 맞을 정도로 맘에 들었다.

알고보니 지코의 '아무노래' 바로 아래에서 부동의 2위를 유지하는 곡이더군.

편곡은 다른 사람이겠지...싶었는데 편곡마저 창모 본인의 결과물이어서 정말 놀랐다.

편곡 센스가 정말 좋았으니까.

그런데 일리네어 소속 뮤지션이어서인지 이 멋진 곡을 뮤비로 풀어내는 방식은 아쉬움이 무지막지하게 남는다.

이 멋진 곡에 기껏해야 여자 두 명을 양쪽에 두고 일어나는 씬으로 시작해서 멋진 시계, 멋진 스포츠카 정도로 뮤비가 이어지다니.

이렇게 노골적으로 돈, 여자 뿜뿜... 이런 뮤비 지긋지긋하다.

재기발랄한 곡에 어울리는 재기발랄한 뮤직비디오를 기대한 나는 그저 보수적인 꼰대일 뿐일까...하는 생각이 들었어.

가장 인상적인 탭댄싱을 꼽아보라면 난 이 영화를 꼽겠다.

1948년작 Charles Walters감독의 <Easter Parade>에서 볼 수 있었던 Fred Astaire의 'Drum Crazy'.

Nicholas Brothers나 Gregory HInes, Gene Kelly등도 대단했지만 난 아무래도 이 위트 넘치는 비트 장인 Fred Astaire의 탭댄싱이 가장 인상깊다.

오아시스 OASIS 좋아한 적 한 번도 없었습니다.

전 블러 Blur를 좋아했어요. Blur를 좋아해서 오아시스를 싫어한게 아니라 오아시스의 음악에 전혀 매력을 못느꼈을 뿐 입니다.

그런데 뒤져보니 오아시스의 라이브 VHS가 나오네.

좋아하지도 않는 밴드의 비디오테이프는 왜 갖고 있는건지.

제대로 본 적도 없는지 상태도 완전 좋아.

어제(8.18) 오전 올렸던 Jadu Heart는 개인적으로 무척 관심을 갖고 있는 런던 듀오.

개인 블로그에 2017년 글을 따로 올렸을 정도로 좋아하는데 얼마전 발표된 이들의 정규앨범 <Melt Away>를 듣다가 내가 무심결에 다른 앨범을 틀었나?싶었다.

갑자기 영국의 포크싱어인 Vashti Bunyan의 1970년 곡인 'Diamond Day'가 흘러 나온 것.

무슨 일이지? 싶어 <Melt Away>의 트랙리스트를 보니 마지막 곡이 'Diamond Day'였다.

아마도 이들도 여느 뮤지션들처럼 Vashti Bunyan의 음악을 좋아했나보다.

Vashti Bunyan의 70년 음반에선 이 곡이 탑트랙인데, Jadu Heart의 음반에선 이 곡이 피날레를 장식하는 클로징.

Vashti Bunyan의 원곡을 훼손하지 않고 아름답게 가꾸고 자신들의 목소리를 살짝 얹는 것으로 마무리했다.

덕분에 긴 여운이 남는 클로징이 된 것 같아.

이 재발매 CD에는 SPINNEY 라는 레이블명이 찍혀 있지만 오리지널 초판 LP에는 Philips 레이블이 찍혀 있다.

그 음반의 클로징.

Vashti Bunyan을 빼고도 영국의 70년대 초중반 folk rock 씬은 어마어마했다.

아무리 길어 올려도 마르지 않는 샘같은 것이 바로 브리티쉬 포크 록 씬이었으니.

그 중 Vashti Bunyan은 그저 보석같은 음반 한 장을 발표하고 무관심 속에 낙망하고 사라져버렸던 수많은, 정말 수많은 재능있는 뮤지션 중 한 명일 뿐이었다.

그러다 2000년 초반에 그녀의 70년작이 CD로 reissue 되었고 당혹스러울 정도로 갑작스러운 팬덤 현상이 일어났다.

Devendra Banhart와 Joanna Newsom이 대놓고 이 앨범에 대한 애정을 드러내는가 하면 많은 뮤지션들(Animal Collective등등)이 그녀에게 러브콜을 보내기 시작했다.

30년이 지난 후에야 강제로 다시 재기하게 된 그녀는 오래 전 무관심 속에 낙망하고 떠났던 음악계로부터 보상받는 기분이었을 듯.

그야말로 diamond day 아닌가.

그 뒤로 재기 음반들도 발매했다.

Violent Femmes가 또다시 신보를 발매했다.

경이롭다. 정말.

이 테이프는 내가 중학생 때 교류가 있던 미쿡인 친구가 미국으로 되돌아가면서 선물로 준 테이프.

이 음반이 Violent Femmes의 역사적인 데뷔작이며 명곡 'Kiss Off'가 수록된 음반이다.

이 음반을 내기 전까지만해도 Violent Femmes는 위스콘신의 로컬 밴드에 불과했는데 그 미쿡인 친구가 내게 이 테이프를 주면서 했던 말이 이 밴드는 엄청나게 유명해질거야! 이었다.

엄청나게...까지는 아니어도 컬트적 인기는 지금까지 이어지고 있지.
